WHAT IS A BAPTIST CHURCH?
There are Baptist churches in almost every country in the world. As part of the world-wide Christian church, Baptists form one of the largest families of faith, alongside other trinitarian Christian traditions such as Anglicans, Methodists, Reformed, etc.
For Baptists the concept of a family is important. The church is not so much a particular place or building, but rather a family of believers, committed to Christ, to one another and to the service of God in the world.
In this Baptist family everybody is equal, for everybody has a part to play in the service of God. There is no hierarchy of bishops or priests exercising authority over their members. We are supported by, and support other churches through the Eastern Baptist Association and the Baptist Union of Great Britain.
WHAT WE BELIEVE
GOD CREATED ALL THAT THERE IS
From the ant to the whale, the flowers and trees, the planets, the stars and everything we see, God made it all. Everything in the universe points to a perfect order, which is designed by an awesome creator that we call God.
THE BIBLE IS GOD’S PERFECT GUIDEBOOK FOR LIVING
God inspired people to write it. Every word of its 66 books, in their original form and language, was chosen by God. 2 Timothy 3:16 says: All scripture is inspired by God and is useful for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness.
The Bible is God’s instructions to ALL humanity. And because it is from God, it is the final authority on every issue it covers, and shows us what God is like and how He wants us to live.
GOD IS BIGGER, BETTER AND CLOSER THAN WE CAN IMAGINE
There has always been one true God. Although we can’t get our minds around it, God has always existed as three distinct and equal persons – the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit. The Bible tells us that each character of God is unique and has their own way of interacting with us.
WE WERE CREATED BY GOD
IN HIS IMAGE.
We, humans, are the pinnacle of God’s creation, the only part of creation made in His image. We are made to be like Him in character, with the moral ability and freedom to choose between right and wrong and to spend eternity with Him in heaven.
But every one of us has inherited a disobedient heart from Adam, the first man. This disobedience, unless put right by Jesus, separates us from God and stops us from spending eternity in heaven.
JESUS IS THE WAY, THE TRUTH
AND THE LIFE.
Our disobedience to God has separated us from Him. No matter how hard we try, we can never earn our way back into the Father’s presence.
Jesus is God’s Son. He existed before time began, but left his place with his father to live among us in the first century AD. While He lived on earth, He was completely God and completely human at the same time. After living a perfect, sinless life, Jesus sacrificed his life to pay for our disobedience, that we may live eternally with him in heaven
WE BECOME PART OF GOD’S FAMILY WHEN WE FOLLOW JESUS.
When we accept Christ into our lives we are adopted into God’s family. As part of this family, the early church met to worship together and to learn about God by through preaching and teaching. The early believers spent time praying together, using their gifts and talents to build each other up and serve each other and to tell others the good news about Jesus, living out all He told them to do. We are committed to continue doing all this with the help of the Holy Spirit.
GOD TRULY DESIRES A RELATIONSHIP WITH US
Jesus sacrificed himself for all of us. Our ONLY hope for eternal life, is to trust in Jesus. God’s forgiveness is possible because of Jesus’ death on the cross. The Bible teaches that we need to have a complete change of mind, believe what Jesus did for us and that we need His forgiveness. When we do this and follow Jesus, we start the eternal and abundant life Jesus promises for all who believe in Him and follow Him. John 3:16
OUR HISTORY
Holly Lodge was inspired and founded by four sisters named Peddar in June 1887. Meetings were first held in a barn before the first church building was erected on the grounds of the sister's home, "Holly Lodge", hence the name. In July 1953 the Church became independent and called its first minister in 1956 and was constituted as a Baptist Church that year. In 2009 the original church building (the "tin tabernacle") was replaced with our current church building.
